RANGERS VS LIGHTNING POST GAME WRAP UP 12/10

RANGERS FALL TO TAMPA BAY 6-3
Penalties lead to Rangers loss to Bolts

Six man advantages to one of the most threatening power plays in the NHL hurt the Rangers last night against the league leading Tampa Bay Lightning. Although the Rangers only gave up 2 goals on 6 chances for Tampa, both goals from Steven Stamkos, the wear and tear led to their demise.

The Rangers came out strong against the Bolts taking the lead on a goal from Kevin Hayes, a soft shot that deflected in off former Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and past goaltender Louis Domingue for the 1-0 tally. Steven Stamkos, minutes later tied the game 1-1 while Tampa was on the power play for his first of the game. Hayes would once again put the Rangers back in the lead 2-1 which held through intermission and into the second period.

Tampa opened the scoring while once again on the power play, a falling flip of the puck by Stamkos which went over a sliding Fredrik Claesson and then over the shoulder of Henrik Lundqvist to tie the game 2-2. From there the Rangers would not produce much offense even with time spent in the Bolts end as they just couldn't get any shots off on Domingue. McDonagh added a  goal going coast to coast untouched from behind the Lightning net and was able to squeak one through the pads of Lundqvist to give Tampa the lead 3-2.

The third period was another rough one for the Rangers as Stamkos added his third goal of the game for the hat trick, his 700th career point giving Tampa the 2 goal lead 4-2. Anthony Cirelli would pick pocket Claesson from behind and go short side on Lundqvist to make it 5-2. While the Rangers had an early chance against Domingue when Jesper Fast fell in front on a two on one rush, Fast was able to get a shot off while on the ice with a backhand shot and just missed wide. New York did have their opportunities but failed to get any shots off during a few extended rushes in the Bolts' end. Tampa held the Rangers to just 17 shots on goal during the game and only allowed 4 in the third period. Jesper Fast would put the Rangers within 2 goals with less than 3 minutes remaining and Lundqvist on the bench for the extra attacker the last offense the Rangers could muster. Cirelli tallied his 2nd of the game with 40 seconds remaining into a Rangers' empty net to seal the win for Tampa, their 7th in a row.

The Rangers penalty kill allowed 2 goals on six Lightning attempts while the power play went O for one. Lundqvist who again kept the Rangers ahead and in close range of a comeback stopped 27 of 32 shots that he faced.

The Rangers now leave Florida with a record of 1-1 for the short road trip, defeating the Panthers on Saturday in the shoot out. They return home on Friday, hosting the Arizona Coyotes at MSG.

Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was lost to injury in the second period after a shoulder to shoulder hit with ex-Ranger J.T. Miller in the corner. Shattenkirk skated slowly to the Rangers bench holding his left arm low and was seen flexing and trying to rotate the shoulder. He eventually left for the locker room and the rangers announced that he would not return to the game before the end of the period due to an upper body injury.
