RANGERS VS PANTHERS POST GAME WRAP UP 12/8

RANGERS END 3 GAME SKID IN SUNRISE
Blueshirts Blow 3 Leads But Hold Off Panthers for 5-4 Shootout Win

Surprisingly the Rangers came out full force in the first period after a 6 day scheduling layoff. Looking as they had no "rust" the Rangers were able to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mika Zibanejad just 4 minutes into the first period. The Rangers would limit the Panthers to 7 shots on goal and add a late period goal from the returning Vladislav Namestnikov to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.

As the season has gone lately the Rangers have had a tendency to give up leads and have to battle back to either tie the game or retake the lead, here in the second period was no exception as Florida who has one of the highest goal percentages in the middle frame held up to their record. An early interference penalty to Marc Staal set the tone as former Ranger Keith Yandle put the Panthers within 1 with a power play goal just under a minute in. Jonathan Huberdeau would tie the game for the home team 2-2 under the 5 minute mark. The Rangers were able to take back the lead 3-2 when Matt Beleskey tallied his first goal of the season and as a Ranger in his second appearance after being called up from Hartford last week. Aaron Ekblad would add a goal for the home team to take the game heading into the 3rd period with a tally with 2 minutes remaining in the second.

A back and forth battle would end up with the Rangers' Fredrik Claesson and Panthers' Aleksander Barkov trading goals in the third period to take the game to overtime which saw two future hall of fame goaltenders, Henrik Lundqvist and Roberto Luongo exchange brilliant saves to keep the game tied to head into the shootout round. Lundqvist shined more so than Luongo with most of the pressure in the Rangers zone late in the 5 minute period, making dazzling saves to keep the game tied at 3.

Florida as the home team, selected to go second in the shootout. First round match up saw the Rangers Mika Zibanejad deke Loungo and go short side for the goal, Panthers Aleksander Barkov would be stopped by a glove save from Lundqvist, the Rangers up 1-0, Round two, Kevin Shattenkirk for New York and Jonathan Huberdeau for Florida would both tally to make it 2-1 in favor of the Rangers. Kevin Hayes would put the game in the books with the Rangers 3rd tally of the shootout and give the rangers the two points and end their 3 game losing streak.

The Rangers, off on Sunday head cross state to take on the first place Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.
