Today in NYR History January 5:


1957: The NHL comes to network television in the United States for the first time when CBS airs a Saturday afternoon game between the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks from Madison Square Garden.

Bud Palmer does play-by-play and Fred Cusick handles the color commentary and interviews during the Rangers' 4-1 victory. It's the first of a series of Saturday afternoon telecasts that extends through the 1959-60 season.


1963: Andy Bathgate sets a Rangers record by scoring a goal in his 10th consecutive game. The tally helped the Rangers tie the Montreal Canadiens, 2-2, at the Forum.


1972: The Rangers rout the St. Louis Blues, 9-1, at The Garden.


2011: Mats Zuccarello scores his first NHL goal, an overtime marker in a 2-1 victory over the Carolina.
