RANGERS AT PENGUINS POST GME WRAP UP 1/14

RANGERS FALL TO PENS 5-2, DROP 3RD STRAIGHT

Despite 43 saves by Henrik Lundqvist the Rangers without Captain Ryan McDonagh (unspecified injury) and Kevin Hayes (contusions) the Rangers who were leading 2-1 after the first period on goals by Michael Grabner and Brendan Smith just could not hold on for the win.

The whhels fell off for the Rangers in the second period when both Marc Stall and Steven Kampfer got caught up ice while David Desharnais was the only man bck in the defensive zonethe Pens were able to tie the game on a rebound by Dominick Simon. Just 1:15 later Phil Kessel scored out in front after a Kevin Shattenkirk giveaway behind the Rangers net to make it 4-2 in favor of Pittsburgh.

Sydney Crosby and fromer Ranger Carl Hagelin (empty net goal) added goals for Pittsburgh in the third period to send the Rangers home with their third straight loss.

The Penguins now move ahead of the Rangers into the first wild card spot while the Rangers drop to the second position.
