Today in NYR History October 5:


1983: The Rangers score a team-record three short-handed goals in a 6-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at MSG. Don Maloney ties a team record with two short-handed goals.


1991: Mark Messier makes his Rangers debut, and the Blueshirts defeat the Boston Bruins, 2-1, in overtime at Boston Garden. Rookie Sergei Nemchinov scores his first NHL goal for the overtime winner.


1996: Wayne Gretzky makes his Rangers debut in a 4-4 tie with the Boston Bruins at the Fleet Center in Boston.


2006: Jaromir Jagr is named the 24th captain in Rangers history, and Brendan Shanahan scores two goals, including his 600th career tally, in his Rangers debut. The Rangers beat the Washington Capitals, 5-2, on opening night at MSG.
