RANGERS vs PENGUINS POST GME WRAP UP 10/17

McDONAGH’S TURNOVER COSTS RANGERS IN OVERTIME

Just under a minute into overtime a costly turnover by Rangers’ Captain Ryan McDonagh was the deciding factor in a game that saw the Rangers come back from a 2-0 deficit to eventually go ahead twice in the game only to come out on the losing side just :58 into overtime. Coming from behind the Rangers net Ryan McDonagh skated straight towards the Penguins Phil Kessel and “handed” him the puck. Kessel in turn made the pass to a wide open Evgeni Malkin who promptly put the game winner behind a surprised and naturally out of position Henrik Lundqvist.

Pittsburgh opened the scoring when Phil Kessel scored just :43 seconds into the first period. An unfortunate habit that the Rangers have been falling into this season, giving up the lead in the opening minutes once again. Former Ranger Carl Hagelin in on a 2 on 1 put the Pens up 2-0 before heading to the first intermission.

The Rangers looked like a team possessed in the second period and David Desharnais tallied his first goal as a Ranger to cut the lead 2-1. The Rangers took advantage of a four minute penalty to Pens’ Captain Sidney Crosby for a high stick when he drew blood on Jimmy Vesey. The Rangers tallied goals on both power plays off the sticks of Pavel Buchnevich and J.T. Miller. All 3 Rangers goals coming in a span of 2:30 to take a 3-2 lead.

The Penguins did not let those goals go unanswered as Patric Hornqvist was able to put one past fellow Swede Henrik Lundqvist to tie the game at 3 and head to the locker room with both teams even.

Back and forth play and  a few strong pushes in the Pens zone led to a 2 on none rush by New York’s David Desharnais and Michael Grabner, passing back and forth between the two Desharnais passed over to Grabner who put the go ahead goal past Matt Murray.

The Rangers lead held until the final minute when Crosby who shied away from touching a puck which would have stopped play due to a hand pass allowed Rangers Kevin Shattenkirk who did not see the infraction to touch the puck, negating the stoppage. Crosby to the puck towards the corner and fired the puck on the backhand which by luck banked in off the back of Henrik Lundqvist for the 4-4 tie with just :58 to go in regulation.

The Rangers picked up a point in the game but fell to 1-5-1 with 3 points in the standings and sitting at the bottom of the Metro Division in 8th.

The Rangers return to action Thursday once again at home to face crosstown rivals the New York Islanders.
