Today in NYR History October 11:


1950: Neil Colville makes his head coaching debut, becoming the fourth head coach in team history.


1978: Phil Esposito turns the captaincy over to Dave Maloney. At 22 years and 72 days old, Maloney becomes the youngest captain in team history. 


1997: Wayne Gretzky records his 50th regular season hat trick, and the final one of his career, in a 6-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver. Gretzky added two assists in the Rangers win.


2000: In his first game back at MSG since re-joining the Rangers, Mark Messier scores the game-winning goal in a 3-1 Rangers victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
